Dubai is a city of big, grand plans with some of the tallest buildings in the world and massive ideas. But few come bigger than Dubai Square – a sprawling 7.4 million square metre residential space featuring a mall, a wildlife sanctuary, and other leisure destinations.
Earlier this month, we reported on the mall side of the project – described as an indoor city – for its intriguing design which will be big enough for cars to drive through it. The project, being developed by the company behind the Burj Khalifa, Emaar Properties, is the vision of billionaire Mohamed Alabbar. The finishing touches to the design for the retail and entertainment mall at Dubai Creek Harbour were made this week, with construction set to begin soon.
History of Dubai Square
The full Dubai Creek Harbour project has been in the pipeline for years with the first announcement made in 2018. Plans for the tower at the harbour were first announced in 2016 by HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, UAE Vice President and Prime Minister, and Ruler of Dubai. The tower was meant to be completed by 2020. Original plans for the Dubai Creek Tower proposed it would be taller than the Burj Khalifa. The proposed tower has since been scaled down to a 500m structure described as a ‘female Burj Khalifa’ by Mohamed Alabbar.
Features of Dubai Square
Current plans for Dubai Square include 7.4 million square meters of residential space with 10,000 residential units, 1,500 hotel rooms, and a retail district similar in size to Dubai Mall. The project will also feature a ‘technologically-enhanced Ice Adventure’ and a rooftop waterpark. Additionally, the Ras Al Khor Wildlife Sanctuary, AI technology for analysis, and a new metro service are part of the development.
Completion Date
It could be several years before we see the finished project, with the final design only just being finalized. Emaar Properties has not yet announced an opening date for Dubai Square, keeping the completion date under wraps.
