Get ready for an extraordinary celestial display as the UAE prepares to witness a stunning blue supermoon on the evening of Monday, August 19. Just a few days prior, skywatchers around the globe enjoyed the Perseids meteor shower, where over a thousand meteors lit up the night sky. Now, the excitement continues with the arrival of the blue supermoon, which will be visible starting around 8 PM and will grace the skies for a delightful three-day period.

What Exactly is a Blue Supermoon?

What Exactly is a Blue Supermoon?

The term “blue supermoon” can be a bit perplexing, as it refers to two distinct phenomena. The first type is a seasonal blue moon, which occurs as the third full moon in a season that contains four full moons. The second, rarer type is the monthly blue moon, which happens when two full moons appear within a single calendar month. The upcoming celestial event on Monday is classified as a seasonal blue moon. The next opportunity to witness a monthly blue supermoon will not occur until May 31, 2026.

This supermoon will appear notably larger and brighter to observers on Earth, as it coincides with the moon being within 90% of its closest approach to our planet, according to NASA. Despite its name, the moon will not actually appear blue; the term is believed to stem from the 1500s, possibly derived from an old English phrase meaning “the betrayer moon,” or a reference to rare atmospheric conditions that can render the moon a bluish hue.

The Dubai Astronomy Group is hosting a special evening event for those interested in learning more about supermoons. This gathering will feature a Q&A session, live observations of the supermoon, and even a screening of the recent Hollywood film Fly Me to the Moon. If you can’t attend this event, don’t worry! There are numerous fantastic locations throughout the UAE where you can catch a glimpse of the supermoon until Wednesday, August 21.
