Unfinished Mega Projects Shaping Dubai’s Future

The Dubai skyline is constantly evolving, and it’s always exciting to witness the ambitious projects that the city has in store for its residents and visitors. Over the past few decades, Dubai has become synonymous with architectural marvels, from the iconic Burj Khalifa to the man-made beauty of Palm Jumeirah. However, the best is yet to come, as several mega projects are underway that are sure to capture the imagination. Some projects are still in the conceptual phase, while others have taken longer than anticipated, or have transformed into even more spectacular visions. Here’s a closer look at some of Dubai’s most anticipated unfinished projects that we can’t wait to see completed.

Al Maktoum International Airport

Al Maktoum International Airport

Initially inaugurated in 2010, Al Maktoum International Airport is poised to become the busiest airport in the world. Starting with cargo flights, the first phase of the airport was modest, but recent announcements from the government have unveiled ambitious long-term plans for this pivotal project. Along with the airport’s expansion, an entire new city is set to rise around the site in Dubai South, boasting a capacity to accommodate a staggering 260 million passengers.

Unfinished Mega Projects Shaping Dubai's Future

As envisioned, Al Maktoum will eventually be five times the size of Dubai International Airport (DXB). The Government of Dubai has indicated that within the next decade, all operations from DXB will be transitioned to Al Maktoum, making the 2030 deadline a significant milestone. However, it’s important to note that the completion of the entire project, including surrounding areas and additional features, may extend until 2050. Dubai World Islands

Dubai World Islands

The Dubai World Islands project is a breathtaking design that resembles a map of the world, making it an extraordinary destination. Imagine being able to reach Europe in just 20 minutes from Dubai! Launched in 2003, the project faced a hiatus around 2008, but it regained momentum in 2014 with the Kleindienst Group’s initiation of the Heart of Europe development. In December 2021, the Anantara World Islands resort opened its doors, marking a significant milestone as the first resort completed within this ambitious vision.

While not all islands have been developed, visitors can already experience the unique Raining Street at the Cote d’Azur Monaco Hotel, with more luxurious projects like the Maldives-inspired Honeymoon Island and the Marbella Resort Hotel in the works. These islands promise to deliver an unforgettable staycation experience in the years to come.

Jebel Ali Palm

Jebel Ali Palm

Work on the Jebel Ali Palm was left stagnant for 15 years after the initial foundations were laid, with construction halted in 2008. However, in 2023, the project has made a triumphant return, with construction resuming to create an island that is set to be twice the size of Palm Jumeirah. Backed by developer Nakheel, this expansive island will cover over 13.4 kilometers and will host more than 80 hotels and resorts, beach clubs, and even a vibrant ‘celebration village.’

For those considering residency on this new island, there will be plenty of residential options available, alongside a lifestyle mall and a yacht club. While there is no definitive completion date yet, the prospect of visiting Palm Jebel Ali is becoming more tangible, and we eagerly await its unveiling.

The Island

The Island

First announced in 2017, The Island project has yet to be completed, originally speculated to be the site of the UAE’s inaugural casino. However, in 2023, it was confirmed that Ras Al Khaimah would instead house the first UAE casino, while the Dubai Vegas-style island will proceed without gaming facilities. Currently under construction, this island is set to emerge in the sea next to Jumeirah, featuring three iconic hotels: MGM, Bellagio, and Aria.

Along with stunning views of the Burj Al Arab and an extensive beachfront, guests will enjoy a variety of cafes, restaurants, lagoons, and a state-of-the-art entertainment venue. While a final completion date remains to be announced, we will keep you informed about its progress.

Six Senses Dubai Marina

Six Senses Dubai Marina

Announced in 2024, the Six Senses Dubai Marina is set to become the world’s tallest residential building upon its completion. The initial framework of the structure has already begun to take shape, and design renderings indicate that this tower will surpass the heights of Marina 101 (425m) and Princess Tower (414m).

Unfinished Mega Projects Shaping Dubai's Future

With an impressive 122 floors and 251 luxury apartments, the building’s wellness theme will include unique features such as a crystal sound healing room and a magnificent 25-meter lap pool. Residents will enjoy amenities tailored for well-being, including the innovative ‘Sleep With Six Senses’ bedrooms outfitted with wellness-focused elements, such as custom wellness wardrobes stocked with fitness equipment and mood-enhancing sensory art.

While it may take a few more years for the tower to open its doors, construction is projected to wrap up in 2028, and the anticipation continues to grow.
