When Did Construction Begin on the Burj Khalifa?
Construction commenced in 2005 (Credit: burjdubaiskyscraper.com). The journey to create the Burj Khalifa began back in 2004, at a time when Downtown Dubai looked vastly different from the vibrant metropolis it is today. Given the immense scale of the project, a staggering amount of materials were required to bring this vision to life. A remarkable 330,000 cubic meters of concrete, 39,000 tonnes of steel, and 103,000 square meters of glass were utilized in the construction process.
The initial two years were dedicated to excavations and building the first 50 floors. By 2006, the focus shifted to reaching the 100th floor. Officially opening its doors in January 2010, the Burj Khalifa required an astounding 22 million man-hours to construct and now encompasses a total area of 5.67 million square feet. By 2009, the tower’s structure was visibly taking shape (Credit: Imre Solt), and in July 2007, it officially became the world’s tallest building when it reached 141 floors. Today, the Burj Khalifa features a total of 200 floors, with 160 of them being habitable. In addition to being the tallest building on the planet, the Burj Khalifa holds nine other remarkable world records.
