An Ultra-Rare Comet Approaches Earth

An extraordinary celestial event is on the horizon, as the ultra-rare comet C/2023 A3 is set to make a spectacular pass by Earth for the only time in our lifetimes next month. According to the Dubai Astronomy Group, this comet, also known as Tsuchinshan-ATLAS, is anticipated to be exceptionally bright and fast, boasting a stunning long orbital tail. It is described as a “relic from the formation of the solar system,” providing a unique opportunity for stargazers.

While the comet has been spotted in various countries, its visibility remains low on the horizon for keen observers in the United Arab Emirates. To mark this celestial occurrence, the Dubai Astronomy Group plans to host a special event on Sunday, October 20, when the comet is expected to be at its most visible from the UAE. However, this date is yet to be confirmed, as precise visibility won’t be known until closer to the date. Stay tuned to Time Out Dubai for updates on when you can catch a glimpse of this remarkable event from the emirate.

Why Is Comet C/2023 A3 So Special?

Why Is Comet C/2023 A3 So Special?

Dubbed the “comet of the century”, C/2023 A3 could shine so brightly that it might be visible to the naked eye. Composed of frozen gases, rocks, and dust, this comet travels close to the sun, completing an orbit approximately every 80,000 years. According to NASA, this comet is expected to be one of the most spectacular to observe, characterized by its long, streamer-like tail that has brightened as it neared the sun.

Interestingly, the comet has had a tumultuous journey; at one point, it was thought to have completely vanished. Fortunately, this was not the case, and there have been no signs of disintegration. The BBC’s Sky At Night Magazine notes that while seeing the comet is not guaranteed, its recent visibility in the southern hemisphere suggests it is in “fine health.” Its brightness and long tail have drawn comparisons to notable past comets, such as Hale-Bopp in the 1990s and NEOWISE in 2020.

Khadijah Ahmad, the operations manager of the Dubai Astronomy Group, emphasizes the significance of this event, stating, “Comets pass by every now and then, but quite rarely. We don’t know much about this comet, and the closer it gets, the more we learn.” She compares witnessing a comet to encountering a relic from history, remarking, “They are ancient visitors, remnants from the formation of the solar system.”

Prime Stargazing Locations in the UAE

Prime Stargazing Locations in the UAE

NASA recommends choosing dark locations away from the bright lights of the city for optimal stargazing. Urban light pollution can obscure the beauty of faint stars and the Milky Way. Recently, the Dubai Astronomy Group organized an outing to Al Lisaili Desert, where attendees observed Saturn at its closest approach to Earth.

Here are some excellent locations for stargazing outside of Dubai:

Al Sadeem Astronomy Centre

Situated in Al Wathbah, Abu Dhabi, the Al Sadeem Astronomy Centre opened its doors in 2016. It offers guided tours and night sky observations using both traditional and compact smart telescopes. Events are typically scheduled around significant dates in the space calendar, and visits can be booked online.

Dhs150 (adults), Dhs50 (children aged 8-17). Entry by reservation only. Al Wathbah, Abu Dhabi.

Al Quaa Milky Way Spot

For a serene stargazing experience away from city lights, Al Quaa Milky Way Spot is a prime choice. Located approximately 90 minutes from Abu Dhabi towards Al Ain, this secluded spot requires a 4×4 vehicle and some desert driving skills. It is easily found on Google Maps (23.604633, 54.750256) and promises breathtaking night sky views.

Hatta

Located just an hour and a half from Dubai, Hatta offers a picturesque setting for stargazing, though light pollution can be an issue. During cooler months, visitors can enjoy activities such as exploring Hatta Wadi Hub, Hatta Dam, and Hatta Heritage Village. Adventurous souls can also partake in hiking and mountain biking. For those looking to extend their visit, there are options for camping, glamping, or staying in hotels.
