Enhancements to Dubai’s Roadways: A Monthly Update
Navigating through Dubai’s bustling traffic can often feel like an unending struggle, with precious time lost in the confines of a car. Fortunately, the city is committed to easing these traffic woes, consistently enhancing our road networks through both grand and minor projects each month. This month, we’ve witnessed the inauguration of new bridges and roads that promise to significantly reduce travel times on commonly congested routes in busy neighborhoods. While many are aware of larger, ongoing infrastructure projects aimed at alleviating traffic, the more subtle, yet impactful changes implemented by the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) often go unnoticed. Here, we shine a light on some of the recent improvements you might have missed in popular areas of Dubai.
New Bridges Enhance Connectivity in Zaa’beel and Al Quoz
The RTA has recently unveiled two major bridges as part of the extensive Al Khail Road Development Project. This initiative is poised to bring about a remarkable 30% reduction in travel time for commuters. The project, which includes the construction of five bridges and lane expansions along Al Khail Road, has resulted in two new bridges located in Zaa’beel and Al Quoz 1, facilitating smoother transit in the direction of Jebel Ali.
- The combined length of these bridges is approximately 1,350 meters.
- They are engineered to accommodate up to 8,000 vehicles per hour, significantly alleviating congestion.
Reducing School Traffic in Umm Suqeim
In a bid to streamline school traffic, the RTA has introduced a brand new road on Umm Suqeim Street, specifically designed to reduce congestion by up to 40%. This new thoroughfare, which extends for 500 meters, features two lanes in each direction and connects the entrances of King’s School to a newly constructed detour in the vicinity. This thoughtful design aims to ease the morning rush for parents and students alike, making the school run smoother and less stressful.
Bridges Opened for Enhanced Flow Towards Al Qusais and Deira
On September 15, the RTA inaugurated two significant bridges as part of the Garn Al Sabkha-Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road Intersection Improvement Project. These new structures are designed to streamline traffic flow and reduce travel times.
- The first bridge spans 601 meters and is a two-lane structure capable of handling 3,200 vehicles per hour, facilitating eastward traffic from Garn Al Sabkha Street to Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road, then northward towards Al Qusais and Deira.
- The second bridge, measuring 664 meters, is also a two-lane bridge that allows for uninterrupted traffic flow by eliminating vehicle overlap from Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road heading south toward Al Yalayis Street and Jebel Ali Port, also accommodating 3,200 vehicles per hour.
Increased Speed Limits and Road Widening in Al Khawaneej
The RTA has also announced an increase in the maximum speed limits on two key roads in Al Khawaneej. The new regulations set the speed limit on Sheikh Zayed bin Hamdan Al Nahyan Street to 100 km/h between Dubai Al Ain Road and the Academic City Roundabout. Further along, the limit has been adjusted to 90 km/h between the Academic City Roundabout and Al Khawaneej Street. Additionally, Al Amardi Street will have a standardized speed limit of 90 km/h from Al Khawaneej Street to Emirates Road. These measures are part of the city’s ongoing strategy to enhance traffic flow and bolster road safety across the region.
