Following an official visit by Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan to the United States in September, it was announced that UAE citizens will now enjoy expedited entry into the US, thanks to a new agreement between the two nations. This is particularly beneficial for Emiratis looking to explore the diverse landscapes and vibrant culture of America.

For UAE residents holding long-term visas, the process for obtaining a US visa remains unchanged after this significant diplomatic visit. Below, we delve into the steps required to secure a US visa when traveling from the UAE.

How do you obtain a short-term US visa from the UAE?

Travelers from the UAE have two primary options for short-term visitor visas to the United States. These visas are designed for individuals planning a temporary stay in the US without any intentions of immigration.

• B-1 Visa: This visa is tailored for business travelers attending meetings, conferences, or other professional engagements.
• B-2 Visa: The B-2 visa is the most relevant option for leisure travelers heading to the US for vacations, medical treatment, social events, or short courses of study that do not count toward a degree.

Once you identify the appropriate visa type, you must complete the nonimmigrant visa application form (DS-160), available on the Consular Electronic Application Center’s website. To successfully fill out the form, you’ll need to provide various documents, including:

• Your passport
• Travel itinerary
• Dates of your last five visits to the US (if applicable)
• Your CV or résumé

Additionally, a non-refundable consular fee of Dhs679 ($185) is required at the time of application. When applying from the UAE, you must also schedule an interview at the US Embassy in Abu Dhabi or the Consulate in Al Seef, Dubai.

During the interview, you will answer questions regarding your travel plans, financial situation, and ties to the UAE. While the procedure may seem straightforward, experts from The Visa Services, a company specializing in visa applications, warn that the US visa process can be quite complex. They state:

“Although the process may seem simple, applicants often find it intricate in practice. Scheduling an appointment can be challenging, with wait times sometimes extending beyond a year. Preparing for the interview is a critical step, as many applicants are unsure how to respond effectively to the consular questions. It’s important to note that the interview process in the UAE differs from that in other countries.”

These steps are necessary only for individuals who do not hold a passport from a nation included in the US Visa Waiver Program (VWP), which we will discuss in further detail next.

What is the US Visa Waiver Program?

The US Visa Waiver Program (VWP) allows citizens or nationals of select countries to travel to the USA for tourism or business purposes for up to 90 days without needing a visa. Citizens from most European countries, English-speaking nations, and a few from the Far East are included in this program. However, many nationalities that make up the majority of the UAE’s population, including those from India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, and the Philippines, are not eligible.

• EU countries in the Schengen agreement (except Bulgaria, Cyprus, and Romania)
• Israel
• Japan
• Monaco

To use the VWP, travelers must have a valid Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA) to confirm their eligibility for entry into the US. Citizens of neighboring countries like Canada and Mexico follow a different set of regulations.

Is travel more complicated for expats in the UAE?

While it is evident that expats in the UAE face additional challenges compared to those holding VWP passports, obtaining a long-term tourist visa is still feasible. A representative from The Visa Services explains:

“Anyone can apply for a US visa regardless of their country of origin, but the validity period of the visa can differ based on nationality. For example, travelers from the United Arab Emirates often receive 10-year tourist visas, while individuals from countries like Russia or India may only be granted 3- or 10-year visas.”

However, bear in mind that even if you secure a long-term visa, it does not permit unlimited stays. For instance, a 10-year tourist visa allows you to stay for a maximum of 180 days at a time within that 10-year period.

How much does a US visa cost, and what is the wait time?

As previously mentioned, the visa application fee is a non-refundable Dhs679 ($185). The waiting time for a visa can vary based on when you start the clock. If you consider the interview phase, you will typically receive immediate feedback on your application status. Once approved by the consular officer, your visa is usually issued within 3-5 business days and can be collected at the designated post office.

In some cases, applicants may face longer waiting periods for administrative processing, which may require additional documentation. While this is not common, processing times can range from three to twelve months for certain applicants.
