Gaze up at the night sky and let the stars inspire you! This October, the UAE will witness a spectacular celestial event: the Hunter Supermoon. This remarkable occurrence will shine brightly on Thursday, October 17, 2023, marking the biggest supermoon of the year. Just a week before an incredibly rare comet makes its grand appearance, there’s no better time to engage in some stargazing. With the UAE stepping up its space exploration initiatives through the establishment of its own Space Agency, the night sky is truly calling.
What is the Hunter Supermoon?
This year has already treated us to several supermoons, including the recent Harvest Moon. The Hunter Supermoon, also referred to as the Hunter’s Moon, derives its name from the traditional hunting season, a time when hunters would gather food for the winter months. While you shouldn’t expect the moon to take on a hunter’s form, it certainly promises to be a sight to behold.
What sets this supermoon apart is its extraordinary brightness and size, making it the most spectacular full moon of the year. According to the BBC’s Sky at Night Magazine, this phenomenon occurs because the moon will be at perigee—the closest point to Earth in its orbit. This will be the second to last supermoon for 2023, with another one expected on Tuesday, November 15.
The Dubai Astronomy Group will host a special event at the University of Dubai to help enthusiasts experience this phenomenon firsthand, complete with telescopes for an optimal view. If you can’t make it to their event, fear not! There are plenty of other locations across the UAE perfect for moon gazing.
