Dubai’s Ambitious Traffic Relief Project
Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has unveiled an ambitious Dhs600 million initiative aimed at alleviating traffic congestion throughout the city. This project is a significant component of the Sheikh Rashid Corridor Development Project, which seeks to enhance connectivity between Al Asayel Street and Al Khail Road via Al Nawras Street. The plan includes the addition of multiple exits to Oud Metha and Al Nawras Streets.
The comprehensive development strategy encompasses the construction of four major intersections, approximately 4,300 meters of bridges, and 14 kilometers of new roads. This infrastructure upgrade is designed to serve several critical areas, including Zabeel, Al Jaddaf, Oud Metha, Umm Hurair, and key facilities such as Latifa Hospital and Al Wasl Club. According to Mattar Al Tayer, the RTA’s Director General, this initiative is expected to significantly boost traffic capacity, accommodating an estimated population of over 420,000 by 2030.
One of the standout features of this project is the enhancement of Oud Metha Street, which aims to increase its vehicle capacity from 10,400 to 15,600 cars per hour—a remarkable 50 percent improvement. This upgrade is anticipated to dramatically reduce travel times along the route, decreasing the average journey from 20 minutes to just five minutes, resulting in an impressive 75 percent reduction in travel time.
Key Project Details:
- Four major intersections
- 4,300 meters of bridges
- 14 kilometers of new roads
- Improved connectivity between Al Asayel Street and Al Khail Road
- Increased capacity on Oud Metha Street
The first intersection, situated at the junction of Oud Metha Street and Sheikh Rashid Street, will introduce a left-turn lane for traffic coming from Oud Metha to Sheikh Rashid Street, enhancing its capacity to 1,800 cars per hour. Furthermore, enhancements will be made to the service road on Sheikh Rashid Street between the existing bridge and the exit at Al Zahrawi Street, aimed at easing current traffic congestion and bolstering road safety. The number of right-turn lanes for traffic from Sheikh Rashid Street towards Dubai-Al Ain Road will also increase from two to three, boosting capacity to 4,000 cars per hour.
The second intersection, located at the crossroads of Oud Metha Street with Al Asayel and Al Nawras Streets, will see the construction of two bridges connecting Al Asayel Street to Al Khail Road via Al Nawras Street. The first bridge will feature two lanes and accommodate 2,400 cars per hour, serving traffic from Al Asayel towards Al Nawras. The second bridge will have three lanes and a capacity of 3,600 cars per hour, handling traffic from Al Khail Road towards Al Asayel. Additionally, a separate two-lane bridge will be built to facilitate left-turn traffic from Al Asayel to Oud Metha Street, capable of accommodating 2,400 vehicles per hour.
The third intersection, at the junction of Al Nawras Street and Al Khail Road, will include a two-lane bridge designed to manage traffic from Al Asayel Street towards Al Khail Road, continuing towards the Business Bay Crossing, with a capacity of 3,000 cars per hour. Furthermore, Al Nawras Street will undergo upgrades, including an increase in exit capacity towards Al Khail Road to two lanes. A service road will also be constructed on both sides of Al Nawras Street, providing additional parking spaces as part of the enhancements.
The fourth intersection, located at the intersection of Zabeel Palace Street with Al Khail and Oud Metha Street, will feature the addition of a lane on the left-turn ramp for traffic coming from Al Khail Road to Dubai-Al Ain Road, effectively doubling capacity from 900 cars per hour to 1,800 cars per hour. A single-lane tunnel, which will accommodate 1,200 cars per hour, is also set to be constructed to facilitate traffic from Dubai-Al Ain Road to Al Nawras Street, reducing current traffic overlaps. The project will also expand the existing bridge serving traffic from Al Khail Road towards Oud Metha Street from two to three lanes, increasing its capacity from 2,200 cars per hour to 3,300 cars per hour.
This development marks a significant advancement for motorists in Dubai, promising a smoother and more efficient driving experience across the city.
