Extension of UAE Visa Amnesty Period Announced
The Federal Authority for Identity Citizenship, Customs, and Port Security (ICP) has made a significant announcement regarding the UAE visa amnesty period, originally set for two months. In a surprising turn of events, the ICP has decided to extend this amnesty until the end of 2024, despite earlier warnings to violators that there would be no further extensions. The final day for individuals to rectify their UAE visa status will now be December 31, 2024, coinciding with New Year’s Eve.
Major General Suhail Saeed Al Khaili, the Director General of ICP, explained that this extension aligns with the upcoming 53rd UAE National Day celebrations, reflecting the country’s humanitarian and civilized values. The initial amnesty period, which commenced on September 1, has proven to be immensely popular among violators.
Reasons Behind the Extension of the UAE Visa Amnesty
The extension comes as a response to numerous appeals from individuals who were seeking to correct their visa status. With an additional two months granted, violators have more time to gather the required documentation, leave the country, secure employment, or adjust their residency status. Service centers across the nation have experienced a notable surge in demand, especially as the original October 31 deadline approached.
Al Khaili emphasized that this extension represents the final opportunity for violators to resolve their status without facing penalties. The UAE flag waving in the breeze serves as a reminder of the nation’s commitment to its residents.
Understanding the UAE Visa Amnesty
During the UAE visa amnesty period, individuals whose visas have expired will not face immediate heavy fines and will have the opportunity to leave the country without incurring further penalties. Additionally, they can rectify their visa status during this timeframe without facing fines or travel bans.
In recent years, the penalty for overstaying a visa has been standardized to Dhs50 per day, a reduction from the previous fine of Dhs100 per day. Those wishing to correct their residency status or apply for the necessary travel permits can do so through the ICP’s website and smart channels. Most processes can be completed online, although individuals may need to visit an immigration center in person if their biometric records are incomplete.
If you need to return to your home country, obtaining a departure permit through the appropriate channels will provide a 14-day window for travel. However, if your exit permit expires during the amnesty period, you will still be allowed to travel. Should it expire after December 31, it will be cancelled, and previous fines and travel bans will be reinstated. Once the amnesty period concludes, fines will be reimposed on those who remain in violation, and the ICP has warned that inspection campaigns targeting violators will intensify.
