Dubai’s Ambitious Dhs16 Billion Road Development Project
Dubai is embarking on an ambitious Dhs16 billion road development initiative aimed at enhancing connectivity and improving traffic conditions throughout the city. Among the exciting plans being considered is the introduction of a trackless tram system in the near future. Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the Crown Prince of Dubai and Chairman of The Executive Council, visited the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) on Sunday, November 3, to review the plans for expanding the Dubai Tram network.
A key highlight of this expansion is the potential deployment of trackless tram systems at eight strategically chosen locations across the city. During his visit, Sheikh Hamdan stated, “During my visit to @rta_dubai’s headquarters, I reviewed its AED16 billion Main Roads Development Plan 2024-2027, featuring 22 major projects. I also assessed the progress of RTA’s initiatives in public and shared transportation, designed to enhance service quality and efficiency.”
This innovative, self-driving tram system operates on virtual tracks, utilizing advanced camera technology and marked lanes to guide its route. This forward-thinking solution addresses urban transport challenges while being powered entirely by electricity, making it an environmentally friendly option. Furthermore, it is more cost-effective and quicker to construct than traditional tram systems. Each tram unit comprises three interconnected carriages and can accommodate up to 300 passengers, making it a highly efficient choice for city commuting. With a maximum speed of 70 km/h and an operational speed ranging from 25 to 60 km/h, the tram is designed for optimal performance and safety. Notably, a single charge allows the tram to travel up to 100 kilometers, enhancing its viability as a sustainable public transport option.
Current Tram System Achievements
As the Dubai Tram approaches its 10th anniversary on November 11, 2024, Sheikh Hamdan took the opportunity to review its operational successes. Since its inception, the tram has completed an impressive 950,000 journeys and served around 60 million passengers, showcasing an extraordinary 850 percent increase in ridership since its opening. Remarkably, the tram system boasts an exceptional punctuality rate of 99.9 percent, underscoring its reliability as a public transport network within the city.
Enhancements to Dubai’s Traffic Infrastructure
In addition to the expanded tram network, the ‘Main Roads Development Plan 2024-2027’ is set to revolutionize Dubai’s already impressive infrastructure. One of the standout projects included in this plan is the development of Latifa bint Hamdan Street, which is scheduled to commence in 2025. This ambitious project will extend 12,200 meters and is expected to serve over a million residents while increasing capacity for 16,000 vehicles per hour in both directions, significantly reducing travel time.
The plan extends beyond just Latifa bint Hamdan Street. The Meydan Road and Al Mustaqbal Street projects are also in the pipeline, promising to dramatically enhance traffic flow and alleviate congestion. The Meydan Road project aims to increase capacity for 22,000 vehicles per hour, while the Al Mustaqbal Street initiative will elevate capacity from 9,000 to 12,000 vehicles per hour, effectively cutting travel time from eight minutes down to just three and a half minutes.
With these developments in motion, the future of transportation in Dubai is looking brighter than ever. Buckle up for an exciting journey ahead!
