Global Village: A Celebration of Cultures in Dubai
There is no doubt that Global Village has become a quintessential institution in Dubai, offering a plethora of experiences that cater to all ages. Now in its 29th season, this ultimate family adventure continues to expand, showcasing the rich multicultural spirit of Dubai. As we approach the UAE National Day, it’s a great opportunity to reflect on how Global Village has evolved into the expansive 17.2 million square foot park that we cherish today.
The Early Days: Global Village at Dubai Creek
The inaugural season of Global Village kicked off in 1996 in a humble car park near Dubai Creek, right across from the Dubai Municipality building. Initially conceived as a pop-up event to boost tourism during the Dubai Shopping Festival, it welcomed a remarkable 500,000 guests in its first season. The initial setup spanned 50,000 square meters and featured a modest number of kiosks representing just 10 countries.
By the following year, the event grew to include eight additional country pavilions, marking the beginning of its expansion. By 2001, Global Village had outgrown its original location and needed a larger venue, leading to its relocation to Oud Metha, near Wafi City.

The third season at Oud Metha featured a charming entrance sign, adorned with whimsical illustrations of iconic global landmarks, such as the Taj Mahal and the Pyramids of Giza. As the years progressed, the welcome sign evolved; by season four, it showcased even more landmarks, including St. Basil’s Cathedral in Moscow, the Eiffel Tower in Paris, and the Sydney Opera House. Despite covering an area of 82,000 square meters, the park could only accommodate 1.2 million visitors in 2001, highlighting its growing popularity.
However, the event’s seasons were still relatively short, coinciding with the Dubai Shopping Festival, which lasted approximately a month. The demand for entry continued to surge, prompting yet another move in 2004 to the larger Dubai Festival City.

In 2004, Global Village expanded its footprint significantly, with pavilions representing 31 different cultures across a sprawling 147,000 square meters. This larger venue welcomed an impressive 3.1 million visitors, solidifying its status as a must-visit destination during the Dubai Shopping Festival. Nevertheless, the event quickly outgrew this space as well, leading to its permanent relocation to Dubailand.
The Permanent Home: Global Village at Dubailand
In 2005, Global Village found its permanent residence in Dubailand, transforming into the vibrant cultural hub known today. The expansive 17.2 million square foot area allowed for the introduction of thrilling amusement rides and attractions, making it a more complete entertainment destination. To accommodate the influx of visitors, a spacious parking area with 15,000 spots was also established.
In its inaugural year at Dubailand, Global Village boasted 46 pavilions representing countries from around the world, though some of these, such as the UK, Australia, and Nigeria, are no longer featured. Today, in its 29th season, the park showcases 30 pavilions that celebrate 90 diverse cultures, a newly designed restaurant plaza, and an abundance of stalls and rides that continue to enchant guests.
