RTA Announces Major Road Works in Dubai Neighbourhoods
The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has unveiled an extensive series of road improvements across four key neighbourhoods in Dubai, promising to significantly reduce travel times by up to 80 percent. This initiative is aimed at enhancing the quality of life for residents, facilitating smoother traffic flow, and providing quicker access to vital routes.
The upgraded entry and exit points will be strategically located along major thoroughfares including Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road, Emirates Road, Sheikh Zayed bin Hamdan Al Nahyan Street, and Hessa Street. Residents and commuters in Nadd Hessa, Al Awir 1, Al Barsha South, and Wadi Al Safa 3 can expect a noticeable improvement in their daily commutes.
In line with leadership directives to bolster infrastructure in residential areas and support urban expansion, the RTA has launched this ambitious project. It is estimated that approximately 400,000 residents of Dubai will benefit from these enhancements.
The first phase of the project will see transformative upgrades in Nadd Hessa, where a new exit will reduce travel time by an astonishing 80 percent. An additional entry and exit point from Sheikh Zayed bin Hamdan Al Nahyan Street will feature two new lanes, capable of accommodating up to 6,000 vehicles per hour. Furthermore, a new signalized junction will decrease travel time from 138 seconds to just 37 seconds.
In Al Awir 1, plans include the construction of a new 7.5-kilometer road that will directly connect the neighbourhood to Emirates Road, effectively doubling the current road capacity for residents.
The improvements in Al Barsha South are part of the ongoing Hessa Street development project. This initiative will make modifications to traffic lights at the Hessa Street and Al Barsha South intersection, introducing a third left-turn lane to facilitate smoother access. As a result, waiting time at the signal is expected to drop from four minutes to just one minute. Additionally, two lanes will be widened over a stretch of 1,114 meters on Hessa Street, enhancing the flow of traffic coming from Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road.
In Wadi Al Safa 3, the project will introduce 4 kilometers of new internal roads and entry points, allowing for direct access from Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road. This upgrade will drastically reduce travel time from a lengthy 10 minutes to a mere two minutes.
Lastly, in Al Warqa, a new entry and exit will result in the expansion of internal roads by 8 kilometers, cutting travel time to and from Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road from 20 minutes down to just 3.5 minutes. This segment is slated for completion within one year and is expected to benefit around 350,000 residents through enhancements to Al Warqa 1 Street and the upgrade of existing roundabouts to signal-controlled intersections.
His Excellency Mattar Al Tayer, Director General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of the RTA, emphasized the importance of these upgrades: “This project reflects RTA’s commitment to continually enhance infrastructure in residential areas, including road networks, lighting, and stormwater drainage, to accommodate increasing traffic volumes. With new entry and exit points connecting to Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road, Emirates Road, Sheikh Zayed bin Hamdan Al Nahyan Street, and Hessa Street, the project will benefit over 400,000 residents. It also includes comprehensive roadworks and traffic solutions to improve mobility for residents and visitors across these communities.”
