Etihad Rail Unveils Ambitious High-Speed Train Project
In a groundbreaking announcement, Etihad Rail has unveiled plans to introduce a high-speed rail service in the UAE, revolutionizing travel between key cities. The upcoming passenger service connecting Abu Dhabi and Dubai is set to significantly reduce travel time to just 30 minutes, nearly halving the previously estimated journey duration of 50 minutes. This momentous news was shared during an official ceremony hosted by Etihad Rail at the Al Faya Depot in the capital, marking a year since the inaugural passenger service journey.
With the endorsement of UAE President Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed, the announcement was also attended by Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid, who witnessed the introduction of this transformative high-speed train project. This initiative is expected to further enhance the national transport network.
According to the plans, the high-speed train will achieve impressive speeds of up to 350 km/h, connecting strategic locations and popular tourist destinations, thus facilitating seamless travel for both residents and visitors. However, it may take some time before this ambitious project is operational, as Etihad Rail is currently seeking bids for project contracts and awaiting final approval of network designs.
During a media release, it was confirmed that the development of various phases of the project will take place over the coming years. Hamdan bin Mohammed stated: “Under the directives of His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan and His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, I had the honor of witnessing, alongside my brother Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the historic launch of the high-speed train project.”
Progress in Etihad Rail’s Passenger Services
Currently, Etihad Rail primarily operates freight train services; however, there are comprehensive plans to introduce passenger railway services across all emirates. The royal families of Abu Dhabi and Dubai believe that the high-speed rail link will substantially enhance the quality of life for citizens, residents, and tourists alike.
On social media platform X, previously known as Twitter, Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, Deputy Prime Minister, and Minister of Defence, expressed his gratitude to the Etihad Rail team. He commended their exceptional efforts, stating, “These initiatives will drive progress, shorten distances, save time, and pave the way for a brighter, more connected future.”
In conjunction with the high-speed train announcement, His Highness Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan and His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum reviewed an extensive presentation on the UAE’s inaugural passenger train fleet, which will operate at a slightly slower speed of up to 200 km/h. This will still result in considerably quicker journey times.
The initial passenger service by Etihad Rail will provide a vital link to the eventual high-speed rail service, connecting urban areas and regional routes, and facilitating travel between key cities and communities throughout the UAE.
Additionally, the ceremony on January 23 marked the announcement of the first four passenger rail stations in the UAE, which are crucial steps towards establishing an integrated rail network. These strategically positioned stations in Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah, and Fujairah will enhance accessibility to rail services, integrating seamlessly with existing metro and bus lines for a comprehensive and interconnected transport experience.
Each railway station in the Etihad Rail passenger service is designed to offer amenities such as business-class lounges, retail shops, and family-friendly facilities.
