Upcoming Changes in Dubai: February 2024

In a bustling metropolis like Dubai, where innovation and growth are constants, it can be challenging to stay updated with the latest developments, especially when our lives are so busy. February brings a series of significant changes that could impact your daily commute and overall routine. If you drive in Dubai, it’s essential to be informed about these upcoming updates. To help you focus on the more enjoyable aspects of life—like planning your next brunch—we’ve compiled a summary of the key changes you need to be aware of.

A New Congestion Fee Will Be Introduced

A New Congestion Fee Will Be Introduced

One of the noteworthy changes that may have flown under the radar is the introduction of a congestion fee. This was announced alongside the upcoming variable Salik toll rates and alterations in parking tariffs back in November. Many major cities worldwide, such as London, Singapore, and New York, have implemented congestion charges to alleviate inner-city traffic congestion. Dubai will follow suit with a congestion pricing policy set to launch in February.

Initially, this fee will apply to public paid parking spaces around the Dubai World Trade Centre during events. While further details are yet to be disclosed by the Roads and Transport Authority, it’s essential to keep this change in mind.

If you haven’t heard about the changes to the Salik toll gate fees, here’s what you need to know. As of the end of January, the previously standardized Dhs4 toll fee will be replaced with a new variable pricing structure. This means:

  • Dhs6 during peak hours
  • Dhs4 between 10 AM and 4 PM, and from 8 PM to 1 AM
  • Free of charge during late-night hours

These fees will undergo further adjustments during Ramadan, with all details thoroughly explained in our previous announcements.

While not all changes will be permanent, February will see some significant road closures associated with two major sporting events in Dubai.

  • Burj2Burj Marathon: On Sunday, February 9, the marathon will take place, requiring the closure of major roads as participants run the course between the iconic Burj Khalifa and Burj Al Arab.
  • Spinneys Dubai 92 Cycle Challenge: On Sunday, February 23, this cycling event will start from Expo City, leading to limited access on several roads throughout the race.

The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) will provide further information regarding road closures as the event dates approach.

End of the Second Phase of Winter

Dubai’s second phase of winter is set to conclude on Monday, February 10. This transition will likely bring warmer temperatures as we gradually move towards the spring season in March. Ibrahim Al-Jarwan, the Board Chairman of the Emirates Astronomical Society, has announced that we are entering a period known as Al-Shabt.
