The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) of Dubai has unveiled ambitious plans aimed at enhancing traffic flow in over 75 areas by 2025. Known for its notorious congestion during peak hours, Dubai is taking proactive measures to alleviate journey times across the city. Over the next year, the RTA is committed to implementing more than 75 key improvements throughout Dubai. These plans include the expansion and upgrade of major intersections, the establishment of new entry and exit points in residential and commercial zones, and the introduction of a series of rapid traffic solutions specifically designed for school zones.
Recent improvements have already been witnessed on the busy Sheikh Zayed Road, where three significant projects aimed at reducing congestion were successfully completed in January. The 2025 plans were announced as the RTA reflected on the notable traffic enhancements accomplished in 2024. According to the RTA, traffic upgrades were successfully completed at more than 50 locations across the emirate in 2024. These enhancements are part of the RTA’s strategic initiative for rapid traffic solutions, which aim to enhance road network efficiency, ensure smoother traffic flow, and improve safety for all road users.
Key Dubai Traffic Improvements in 2024
As Dubai’s population continues to surge, the RTA is tasked with finding innovative solutions to meet the ever-increasing demand on its roadways. In 2024, the RTA successfully executed improvements across more than 50 locations in the emirate, significantly enhancing travel times and addressing traffic volumes. Notably, travel times have been reduced by as much as 60 percent in several key areas, while road capacity has increased by 20 percent in various locations.
One of the standout accomplishments from the previous year was the expedited completion of the Dhs700 million Al Khail Road Improvement Project, which was finalized in just nine months. This significant project has dramatically improved journey times across seven bustling locations on Al Khail Road, with areas such as Al Jaddaf, Business Bay, Zabeel, Meydan, Al Quoz 1, Ghadeer Al Tair, and Jumeirah Village Circle reaping the benefits.
Other key locations that underwent valuable enhancements included:
- The widening of Beirut Street
- Upgrades at the intersection of Al Khawaneej Street and Sheikh Zayed bin Hamdan Street
- The creation of a new route linking Al Khail Road to Meydan Street
Furthermore, school pick-up times have notably improved due to enhancement projects that benefited over 37 schools throughout the city last year. The RTA also highlighted the addition of an extra lane at Exit 55, leading to Al Rebat Street, as well as the establishment of a new entry and exit point from Meydan Street and a new roundabout connecting Latifa Bint Hamdan Street with Nad Al Sheba Street.
Hussain Al Banna, CEO of the Traffic and Roads Agency at the RTA, confirmed the plans set for 2025. He stated, “The RTA is set to implement over 75 traffic improvements across key areas in Dubai throughout 2025. The planned enhancements include expanding and upgrading major intersections, constructing new entry and exit points in residential and commercial areas, and introducing a series of rapid traffic solutions in school zones. We will continue to strengthen Dubai’s position as one of the world’s leading cities in infrastructure quality, seamless mobility, and sustainable transportation.”
