The Launch of the UAE Blue Visa for Environmental Innovators

The United Arab Emirates has officially rolled out the initial phase of an exciting new long-term residency option: the blue visa. This innovative program aims to recognize and reward 20 distinguished leaders and innovators in sustainability, as announced by the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment and the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs, and Ports Security during the World Government Summit 2025.

Details regarding this long-term visa were initially revealed in May 2024 in Dubai, reinforcing the UAE’s commitment to becoming a global hub for sustainability and environmental innovation. However, it wasn’t until February 2025 that individuals could formally submit their applications for this coveted environmental visa through the relevant federal authority.

The blue visa is crafted for individuals who have made significant contributions towards the protection and sustainability of the environment, both within the UAE and globally. This opportunity is now available for those who have actively supported environmental initiatives, including members of international organizations, global award winners, distinguished activists, and researchers.

This inaugural phase of the blue visa introduces an electronic system that allows interested applicants to gain online approval for their submissions. This initiative builds upon the well-established UAE golden visa system and the green residency permit, both of which have gained immense popularity over time. The launch ensures that applicants from around the world have 24/7 access to the blue visa service provided by the Federal Authority for Identity and Citizenship.

Dr. Amna Bint Abdullah Al Dahak, the Minister of Climate Change and Environment, emphasized that this visa enhances the UAE’s stature as a global leader in sustainability. She stated, “This initiative aims to leverage their contributions to achieve ambitious national goals and build a sustainable future for the people of the UAE and the world.”

How to Apply for the UAE Blue Visa

The application process for the UAE blue visa begins through the services provided by the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs, and Ports Security. Applicants can also be nominated and recommended by relevant authorities within the UAE.

Application requirements may vary depending on the category and qualifications of the applicants. However, all interested parties must provide supporting documents that demonstrate their contributions and achievements in sustainability, climate change, and environmental protection. To initiate the application process, individuals must either submit a nomination request or be nominated by a competent authority within the UAE. Securing a nomination acts as an initial approval for the application.

The fee for submitting a nomination request is Dhs350. After receiving approval for the nomination request, applicants can proceed with the full application process. Those already residing in the UAE must update their visa status during this process. The application will require information such as:

• Full name
• Contact details
• Category
• Nomination request number

Additionally, personal details including nationality, occupation, date of birth, passport information, faith, and residential address need to be submitted. For applicants outside the UAE, a six-month multiple-entry visa must be obtained first to facilitate the process of acquiring the residency visa.
