When Did Construction Begin on the Burj Khalifa?

The journey of the Burj Khalifa began in 2004, a time when Downtown Dubai was vastly different from the vibrant metropolis we know today. The construction process was monumental, both literally and figuratively, requiring an immense amount of resources to create this architectural marvel.

To bring this vision to life, a staggering 330,000 cubic meters of concrete, 39,000 tonnes of steel, and 103,000 square meters of glass were utilized. The design of the building is inspired by the delicate beauty of the Hymenocallis plant, commonly referred to as the spider lily or desert rose, which can be seen in the tower’s design when viewed from above.

• The base features a unique triple-lobed footprint, echoing the plant’s natural form.
• The tower consists of three wings arranged around a central hexagonal core, providing both stability and aesthetic appeal.

By 2006, the construction was well underway, with significant progress made on the first 50 floors. The quest to reach the 100th floor began shortly thereafter. Officially inaugurated in January 2010, the Burj Khalifa required an astonishing 22 million man-hours to complete, culminating in a total area of 5.67 million square feet.

In July 2007, the Burj Khalifa officially claimed the title of the world’s tallest building, surpassing Taipei 101 in Taiwan as it reached its 141st floor. Today, it boasts a total of 163 floors.

Notably, in November 2007, the highest reinforced concrete core walls were pumped using 80 megapascals of concrete, reaching a remarkable height of 601 meters during construction.

The Burj Khalifa is not just a single record-holder; it boasts nine additional world records, including:

• The highest outdoor observation deck.
• The highest residential apartments.
• The largest LED-illuminated façade.

This magnificent structure serves multiple purposes, housing luxury hotels, corporate offices, and ultra-luxury residential apartments. The Armani Hotel, designed by renowned fashion designer Giorgio Armani, occupies levels one through eight and levels 38 and 39, marking it as the world’s first hotel conceived and developed by Armani himself.

• Levels nine to 16 are dedicated to luxury residences branded by the fashion house.
• Levels 45 to 108 comprise opulent private residences, with a luxury penthouse recently listed for a staggering Dhs180 million in 2024.
• Corporate suites can be found on levels 112 to 154, with the exception of level 122, home to the renowned At.mosphere restaurant, and level 124, which features the At the Top observation deck.

However, a recent announcement from Saudi Arabia poses a potential challenge to the Burj Khalifa’s reign as the tallest building in the world. The Jeddah Tower, officially known as the Jeddah Economic Company Tower, aims to eclipse the Burj Khalifa, reaching a minimum height of 1,000 meters. Though plans for this ambitious project have been in development for over a decade, construction has faced numerous delays.
