RTA Unveils Al Fay Street Project to Alleviate Traffic Congestion
The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) of Dubai has recently shared exciting updates regarding the Al Fay Street project, a significant initiative aimed at enhancing traffic flow and accessibility in the region. With an estimated budget of Dhs1.5 billion, this ambitious project will undergo a comprehensive expansion and improvement, featuring the addition of five key intersections.
This major undertaking will stretch from its junction with Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road, traversing Sheikh Zayed bin Hamdan Al Nahyan Street, and ultimately connecting to Emirates Road. The project is designed to boost the road’s capacity to accommodate an impressive 64,400 vehicles per hour, significantly impacting the daily commute for approximately 600,000 residents in the surrounding areas.
By addressing congestion at multiple critical junctions along the route, drivers can expect a noticeable improvement in accessing various neighborhoods, including:
- Dubai Sports City
- Jumeirah Village Circle
- Dubai Production City
- Jumeirah Golf Estates
- Tilal Al Ghaf
- Damac Lagoons
- The Oasis
- Remraam
The RTA has officially awarded the contract for the Al Fay Street Development Project. As stated in a recent announcement, the project’s two-phase approach will facilitate continuous traffic movement on Al Khail Road towards Emirates Road.
Phase one will concentrate on constructing a two-lane bridge on Al Khail Road, alongside a new bridge on Al Fay Street. HE Mattar Al Tayer, Director-General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of the RTA, commented on the project’s scale: “Given the extensive nature of the project, which includes the development of five intersections, it has been strategically divided into two phases.”
The first intersection will feature a two-lane bridge at the junction of Al Khail Road and Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road, measuring 1,255 meters in length and capable of handling 3,200 vehicles per hour. This bridge will facilitate left turns for traffic originating from Deira on Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road heading towards Al Fay Road, leading to Emirates Road.
Additionally, the number of service road lanes in both directions will be expanded to enhance capacity and improve traffic service levels at this intersection. The project will also include the construction of two bridges, each with two lanes in either direction, extending 2,040 meters and accommodating up to 6,400 vehicles per hour. This bridge will provide direct traffic movement between Jumeirah Village Circle and Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road.
The second intersection will be developed at the roundabout located between Dubai Sports City and Dubai Production City. The new Al Fay Street bridge will feature four lanes in each direction and span over 960 meters, transforming the existing roundabout into a signaled intersection. Furthermore, Al Fay Street will benefit from a 780-meter service road designed to assist traffic coming from Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road.
Moreover, the third intersection will see the construction of a five-lane bridge on Sheikh Zayed bin Hamdan Al Nahyan Street. At the fourth intersection, between Al Fay Street and Emirates Road, a new two-lane bridge will be established, while the fifth intersection will involve the addition of two two-lane bridges connecting Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road to Production City.
